The Port Isabel Tarpons track and field team competed in their final meet of the 2016 season last week before next week’s District 32-4A meet in Port Isabel. On Saturday they took part in the biggest meet of the season, the Meet of Champs, at Weslaco’s Bobby Lackey Stadium.
Omar Silva and Trey Mock had the highest finishes for Port Isabel in individual events. Silva took fifth in the finals of the 300-meter hurdles and Mock also got fifth in the discus.
Thirty schools had teams on hand and the big schools dominated the final standings in the team race. Weslaco took top honors with 57 points, very closely followed by Harlingen South, with 56 points, and Harlingen, with 54. La Joya Palmview, 52, and La Feria, 45, were close behind.
“In prelims we just missed taking a lot of kids to the finals, because we came in fifth,” head Tarpons track coach Joe Gonzales said Tuesday. “They took the top four.”
