Port Isabel High Lady Tarpon runner Natalie Garza took fourth place in the 400-meter dash at the 2016 UIL State Track and Field Meet in Austin last Saturday.
The race was delayed, along with numerous other events, for more than six hours by lightning. It was 8:30 that night when the starter’s gun finally went off, and Garza was ready.
With a staggered start and running in lane No. 1 she appeared to be lagging in last place, but coming around the far turn and entering the home stretch Garza made her move. She passed one runner, picked off another, then moved into fourth place less than 100 meters from the finish line. She was clocked with the automatic timing system at 58.32 seconds.
