Summer league basketball is off and running and numbers are up as quite a few Port Isabel High Tarpons are participating. The Press found P.I. boys head coach Anthony Velarde hanging around the gym this week and he shared his thoughts on this summer version of the high school game.
He pointed out that, by UIL rules, he can attend practices and games but that he is not allowed to do any actual coaching. The players have been practicing and playing on their own since before the end of the school year, and the first games of the summer season were played Tuesday night.
All games for this particular league are played in Harlingen at the gyms of either Harlingen or Harlingen South high schools. This past Tuesday night the Port Isabel varsity squad lost to Brownsville Hannah, 52-37 while the P.I. JV won 47-11 against the Harlingen JV team. The two Port Isabel teams have roughly equal numbers of varsity and junior-varsity players; one team is designated as the varsity and the other as the junior-varsity.
