The Port Isabel 7-on-7 football team fell one game short of the state tournament at the state qualifying tournament at McAllen last week.
The team won two games and lost one in pool play, then fell 19-9 against La Feria in the deciding game.
“We were second in our pool, so we played La Feria, who was first in their pool,” Jarrod Martinez told the Press at Tarpon Stadium this Tuesday.
There were eight teams at the McAllen qualifier. The Port Isabel team lost to Rockport-Fulton, 20-7, then beat Mission IDEA, 20-12, and Hidalgo, 25-7, to advance to the game against La Feria. A win against La Feria would have advanced Port Isabel to the state tournament.
