Once again, the fate of Point Isabel ISD Athletic Coordinator Monty Stumbaugh was the topic of discussion at Tuesday night’s meeting of the School Board of Trustees.

The board was set to deliberate buying the head football coach out of his contract, of which one year remains.

After spending a protracted amount of time discussing the matter in closed session, the board returned to the chamber and a vote was called. Vice President Bertha Zamora made the motion to buy Stumbaugh out of his contract. The motion was seconded by newcomer to the Board, Trustee Alicia Baldovinos.

When the trustees were polled, Jennifer Pinkerton, Diane O’Leary, Mickey Furcron, and Jimmy Vela voting against the buyout. Board President Cecilia Castillo indicated she would have voted in favor of the buyout had there been a tie. With a lack of majority the motion died, effectively keeping Stumbaugh in place at the District for the remainder of his contract.

“I think it was the right thing to do,” Baldovinos said of the vote Wednesday. She cited concerns over whether or not the District could afford a buyout, however.
