The Port Isabel City Commission made quick work of the items up for discussion on Tuesday’s agenda. With a quorum present by the attendance of Mayor Juan Jose “J.J.” Zamora, and Commissioners Carmen Rios and Martin Cantu, Jr., the Commission turned its attention to discussing the Master Parks Plan, the Port Isabel Improvement District and more.

In recent commission meetings, the City had approved changes to the Parks Master Plan to include Arturo Galvan Park, as well as new improvement goals for Washington Park. Those improvements would include an expansion of the basketball court, the installation of more playscape equipment and more.

The City has actively been pursuing sources of funding for the improvements, including applying for state or other grants.

To that end, The Commission mulled enlisting the services of grant writer Patty Alexander to submit a grant application to Texas Parks and Wildlife for improvements at Washington Park. “We needed to get somebody on board to do the application for Washington Park,” City Manager Jared Hockema explained to the Commission.
