Boys, Girls hoops win on opening night

Special to the PRESS

It was opening night of the 2017-2018 basketball season Tuesday night and both Port Isabel High hoops squads came through with big wins.

The Lady Tarpons took on the Lady Chargers of Brownsville IDEA Frontier Academy and led all the way for a 52-35 victory.  The Tarpons also led from start to finish and won convincingly, 64-39, over Harlingen’s Marine Military Academy.

The boys actually had a shutout going for a time as they led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.  The Leathernecks finally got on the board in the second period and outscored P.I. 17-11 to pull within 15 at halftime, 32-17.  That was as close as they got and the Tarpons led by as many as 28, 62-34, around the five-minute mark of the fourth quarter.
