The Port Isabel Tarpons basketball team made history this week. They beat Orange Grove, 69-58, in a bi-district first round playoff game at Falfurrias Monday night for the program’s first post-season win since 2003.
It was Port Isabel’s first playoff appearance since 2012 and the school’s first post-season win since a 70-64 bi-district win over Bishop 15 years ago.
“They’re a bigger team than us, very methodical,” head coach Mike Hazelton told the Press after the game. “We tried to speed things up on them and the kids did a good job of applying pressure the whole time.”
The Tarpons led all the way except for early in the opening quarter, when the Bulldogs went up 4-3 before P.I.’s Tommy Zurita put the Tarpons ahead, 5-4, with a field goal, and Orange Grove could never quite catch up.
