(BROWNSVILLE) — Issues concerning the greater Laguna Madre area were at the forefront here Wednesday evening as candidates vying for the Texas House of Representatives District 37 seat, incumbent René Oliveira (D-Brownsville) and challenger Alex Dominguez (D-Brownville), pled their cases before a standing-room-only crowd during a candidates’ forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters and Frontera Progressives.
Held at the Brownsville Public Library, the forum featured candidates for other area races including the Constable Precinct 2 contender Javier Reyna, along with Carlos Masso and Adolfo Cordova, both who are vying to replace outgoing 197th State District Judge Migdalia Lopez. Candidates for each race participated in three separate 30-minute debates.
In his opening remarks, incumbent State Representative René Oliveira cited over three decades of experience and accomplishments representing the area in Austin as one of the main reasons why voters should continue to support him during the upcoming run-off election. “I still have a lot of work to do,” he said. “In fact, I’ve got my staff already preparing for the next legislative session.”
