The Port Isabel High girls track team was finally able to get in its first meet of the 2021 season last week, and the results were pretty good.
The PRESS found head Lady Tarpons track coach Julie Breedlove at the high school on Monday, and she certainly liked what she saw at the Pirate Relays in Hidalgo on Saturday.
“The most exciting thing was just seeing all the kids out there competing again.”
This was just the first meet of the season and Breedlove reiterated that the important thing at this time was to get into actual competition and establish times, heights, and distances. In doing so individual athletes and relay teams have a starting point and can work from those points to improve each week.
Coach Breedlove was especially pleased with the performances of the freshmen who competed.
“Of the twelve girls that we took almost half were freshmen. Chelsea Gonzalez did well in the shot put and discus.”
That she did, placing fifth in both events. She hit 25-09 on her best attempt in the shot, and 89-11 in the discus.
Junior Madison Ramos was the team’s lone gold medalist. She cleared 4-10 in the high jump and will be attempting to work up to five feet, even by the time of the district meet in April.
“We do have one senior this year, Nicole Pelt, running distance events for us. She was the goalie for the soccer team and this is her first time to run.”
Pelt placed 6th in the 1600-meter run.
Eighteen girls are currently practicing, weather permitting, at Tarpon Stadium, and more are expected to turn out this month.
A dozen athletes may not have been a complete team but Breedlove intends to get the best possible results from however many girls eventually join the team.
“I’ve won district titles with 13 girls. It’s a matter of putting them in the right spots.”
The one event for which the head coach may already have the right combination in place is the mile relay, otherwise known as the metric mile, or the 4 x 400-meters.
“I’d say our mile relay team ran very well this week. So I’d say the foursome we ran last week is probably going to be the same team we’ll run at district.”
Here are the results for the Lady Tarpons at last Saturday’s meet at Hidalgo:
400 meter run: Madison Ramos, 6th-1:12.05. 800 meter run: Gisel Borjas, 5th-2:48.51.
4 x 200-meter relay: Port Isabel, 4th-2:12.02 (Karina Aguilera, Stefany Estrada, Valery Gonzalez, Emily Ramos). 4 x 400: (Gisell Borjas, Madison Ramos, Catalina Romero, Laura Mosqueda).
Shot put: Chelsea Gonzalez, 5th>25-09.00. Discus: Ch. Gonzalez, 5th>89-11.
