In a recent session of the Harlingen Chamber of Commerce, it was revealed that the chamber supports the construction of a second causeway to South Padre Island, a project that has been gaining support recently from many local and county officials and representatives.
At the chamber meeting, Mayor Sepulveda asked that the elected state senators and legislator members make their views on the causeway known to their constituents. Rep.-Elect Janie Lopez of San Benito said,   “That’s been a project for over 20 years now. What’s the reason for it? The reason is there are 150 legislators in the Texas House. 150 people have to vote on it.”
Continuing, she added, “Someone said ‘Well now you’re part of the majority, you’re a republican you can make it happen.’ I can’t make it happen. I’m just one vote.” Along with State Senator-Elect Morgan LaMantia of South Padre, she made it known that both houses of the Texas Legislature must agree on the project.
State Representative Erin Gamez of Brownsville spoke next saying, “We got three votes right here that’s a good start. We’re gonna get after it.” She also stated that reinforcement of the current infrastructure needs to happen immediately. “I don’t know anyone who doesn’t drive over the Queen Isabella Causeway and doesn’t think about that project that’s being done. It’s a constant reminder. It’s not what we want to think when we drive over to our beautiful paradise there,” Representative Gamez continued.
