On Friday, March 10, the Port Isabel Tarpons men’s powerlifting team traveled to Kingsville to participate in the 4A Region 5, Division 2 Powerlifting Championship. The region encompasses teams from around the RGV, Coastal Bend and San Antonio area schools. Thirty schools competed at this year’s region competition such as Alice, Sinton, Somerset, Beeville Jones, CC Calallen, CC Tuloso-Midway, Ingleside, Devine, Rockport-Fulton, La Feria, Raymondville and Port Isabel.
Individual placement was based on the summation of the following three lifts: 1. Squat, 2. Bench Press, and 3. Deadlift resulting in a Total Lift amount. An athlete was awarded points as follows 7, 5, 3, 2, or 1 for finishing as one of the first five finishers in each weight class. Team placement resulted with the summation of the school’s combined individual awarded points. Only the top two lifters in their respective weight class will advance to the State meet, UNLESS they meet a qualifying Total Lift during the Region meet.
