Laguna Heights has been recovering since a tornado struck the small community in the early morning of Saturday, May 13, leaving it in devastation as well as taking the life of 41-year old Robert Flores. The EF1 tornado touched down minutes after 4 a.m. and reached wind speeds of 86-100 mph. The damages resulted in a gas leak, and the road was effectively shut down for a temporary duration.

In the wake of the storm, helping hands and an impressive amount of support have been pouring in from businesses, organizations, county officials, charities and individuals.

Long-time maintenance man of Florence Condominiums on South Padre Island, Armando Rangel, as well as his wife Angela, fell victim to the storm’s damage. Their mobile home was totally destroyed, and their pets were tragically killed.

A gofundme to benefit the Rangel family has been established by Chacon Realty, LLC. So far, $6,680 has been raised. It can be found at https://www.gofundme.com/f/2tr2n-armando-rangel

Cameron County’s Prisoners at Work [PAW] program assisted in the cleanup efforts.

“In partnership with local authorities, incarcerated individuals have been working tirelessly to restore and rebuild the community,” stated Cameron County Sherriff’s Office.

Ramon Lucio is looking to host a charity concert to benefit the people of Laguna Heights. He is on the search for valley-based bands willing to help out. Those interested in more information can call (956) 312-6904.
D’Pizza Joint collected unopened toiletries toys, gift cards and other necessary items to support those affected by the tornado. The goods were delivered along with pizza on Friday, May 19.

Point Isabel ISD partnered with KRGV to collect donations for the victims. The fund can be found at krgv.com

Port Isabel’s Salvation Army gave away free clothing served hot free meals in Laguna Heights and is currently requesting donations of furniture and household items for a family that is being relocated after losing their home in the tornado. Those looking for more information can call Julie Gaucin at (956) 459-2555 or Olga Vega Carter at (956) 433-6291.
