Dominguez aims to retake 37

LA FERIA, TX —Former District 37 Texas State House Representative Alejandro “Alex” Dominguez is among a field of candidates vying for the state house seat.

In a statement, Dominguez said he is the sixth of ten children from a migrant farmworker family, is a prominent figure in Cameron County, and is driven by his background rooted in family values and a commitment to public service.

Born and raised in La Feria, Dominguez is married to Jill Dominguez, and together they have one son, Tobias James.

His educational journey commenced at La Feria High School, where he demonstrated academic excellence and leadership as the president of the National Honor Society and participant in the school band. Graduating with honors, he also excelled in varsity tennis.

Continuing his education at Rice University, Dominguez earned a B.A. in Political Science in 1993, overcoming financial challenges by working three jobs. His achievements at Rice included winning over 70 awards in national speech and debate tournaments and contributing to the book, How to Get a Job in the Pacific Rim.

Furthering his education at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, he received the prestigious Mueller Award for Outstanding Oral Advocate and was inducted into the Order of the Barristers.

After three years as a teacher in Garland, Texas, Dominguez began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney, quickly rising to felony prosecutor. In 2005, he founded the Law Offices of Alejandro Dominguez, handling civil and criminal cases.

Engaging deeply in public service, Dominguez served as a board member of CASA of Cameron and Willacy Counties and is currently the president of the Los Diez Education Foundation, providing scholarships to La Feria graduates for the past 25 years.

As the Cameron County Commissioner for Precinct 2, he played a crucial role in establishing the first all-inclusive playground for disabled individuals in Cameron Park located in Brownsville.

On January 8, 2019, Dominguez was sworn in as the Texas State Representative for District 37, serving four years before redistricting. Distinguishing himself, he was the only Rio Grande Valley member on Appropriations in the 87th Legislative Session and passed bills focusing on public education funding, good health, and veteran rights.

Within the House Democratic Caucus, he has served as the General Counsel and a Deputy Whip, showcasing his experience and dedication to public service. If elected again, Dominguez said he would bring more seniority than any candidate currently running for HD37, emphasizing his commitment to the community’s welfare.

Dominguez, who’s running on the Democratic slate, is facing a Democratic field which includes fellow attorney and current San Benito Commissioner Carol Lynn Sanchez, Brownsville attorney Johnathan Gracia and former Brownsville ISD Board Trustee Ruben Cortez.

The winner of the March 5, 2024 Democratic Primary will face Republican Incumbent Janie Lopez, of San Benito, in the November 2024 General Election. Lopez is unchallenged in the Republican Primary.

Texas House District 37 encompasses all of Willacy County, including the cities of Raymondville, Lyford, and San Perlita.

The District also comprises much of Cameron County, including the cities of Bayview, Combes, Harlingen, Indian Lake, Laguna Vista, Los Fresnos, Palm Valley, Port Isabel, Primera, Rancho Viejo, Rangerville, Rio Hondo, South Padre Island and parts of Brownsville, La Feria, and San Benito.

Early voting commences on February 20, 2024, at various locations, and runs through March 1, 2024.
