Trevino makes bid for Sheriff

BROWNSVILLE, TX—Veteran law enforcement officer Manuel “Manny” Trevino is seeking the Democratic nomination for Cameron County Sheriff in the upcoming March 5 primary.

According to his biography, Trevino, a seasoned law enforcement professional with over 30 years of experience, has dedicated his life to law enforcement. Born in Houston, and raised in Brownsville, Trevino’s journey in law enforcement began on December 20, 1990, marking the commencement of his career.

Trevino attended Brownsville Independent School District (BISD) schools and Texas State Technical College (TSTC) Night Police Academy. His determination to serve the public led him to achieve the prestigious Master Peace Officer Certification in October 2012.

In 1997, Trevino earned a Texas Narcotic Officer of the Year nomination by The Cameron County Drug Task Force Unit. The same year, he received recognition from the Department of the Treasury United States Customs Service for his integral role in Operation Gulf Shield — an Anti-Drug Smuggling Task Force.

From 2002–2004, as Lieutenant of the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Department, Trevino’s dedication culminated in the Investigator of the Year Award in 2009, presented by the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office.

In 2009, FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III recognized Trevino for his pivotal role as an undercover officer and lead investigator in a high-profile drug case.

In 2011, Trevino took on a new challenge, assuming the role of Chief of Police for the City of Primera. In this position, he continues to lead with a commitment to public safety, implementing strategies to address community concerns and fostering positive relationships between law enforcement and residents, his statement reads.

Trevino is also a Co-Founder of the Cameron County Crime Stoppers Program, exemplifying his proactive approach to community engagement and crime prevention.

Trevino faces first-term Democratic incumbent Eric Garza in a sheriff’s primary which also includes challengers Ronnie Saenz and Jesus Rosas, Jr.

The Democratic Primary is set for March 5, 2024. The winner of the Democratic Primary will advance to face Santiago “Jimmy” Manrrique — the lone Republican Cameron County Sheriff’s candidate — in the November 2024 General Election.

Early voting commences on February 20, 2024, at various locations, and runs through March 1, 2024.
