This past weekend, March 22-23, Port Isabel Early College High School athletes competed at the Meet of Champions Track & Field Meet held at PSJA Stadium. The meet featured an eye-opening 55 schools throughout the Rio Grande Valley, including Edinburg, Edinburg Vela, Harlingen, La Feria, Los Fresnos, McAllen, Mission, PSJA North, Rio Hondo, and Port Isabel.
In the girls’ division, freshman Elle Wall finished 5th in the 200-meter run with a time of 26.33 seconds. She also came 5th in the High Jump event with a height of 4’10”.
Senior Emily Ramos finished 5th in the 100m Hurdles with a time of 16.78 seconds and 8th in the 300m Hurdles with a time of 50.02 seconds. Also competing in the 100m Hurdles was Emily Burrage, who finished with a time of 17.75 in the Preliminary.
The 4×100 Relay team of Elle Wall, Lizbeth Perez, Amber Villarreal, and Valery Gonzalez recorded a time of 52.50 seconds, finishing in 22nd place out of 31 teams running in the Prelims.
The 4×400 Relay team, consisting of Elle Wall, Emily Ramos, Lizbeth Perez, and Alisson Solorio, recorded a time of 4:27.84, finishing 19th place out of 27 teams running in the Preliminary.
In the field events, Chelsea Gonzalez placed 5th in the Discus Finals with a distance of 121’-07” and 12th in the Shot-Put Prelims with 34’-01”.
Only a select few PI boys’ athletes competed in the meet. Christian Smith came in 12th in the Triple Jump Prelims with a distance of 39’-06.25”. In the running events, the 4×100 relay team of Robert Medina, Anthony Garcia, Nathaniel Gonzalez, and Luis Ramos recorded a time of 44.85 seconds, finishing in 22nd place out of 32 teams running in the Prelims.
