Lucinda Sandyfeet, South Padre Island sandcastle icon and the woman behind the Holiday Sandcastle Village, wants everyone to have the chance to learn how they can build their very own sandcastle or sand sculpture.
That’s why she offers Sand Camp free to anybody who wants to participate. By the way, no one is ever too old for Sand Camp because all ages are welcome!
In short, Sand Camp brings sandcastles to everybody, says Sandyfeet. It’s a no cost class hosted at Beach Access 16 daily, Monday through Thursday, instructed by Sand Camp Counselors Jose Sanchez and Jewel Marie, from 5-6 p.m.
Sandyfeet dreamed up Sand Camp a decade ago, and her husband, Sanchez, a former schoolteacher, helped bring everything together with his prior experience in education.
“I wanted to make a way for people who don’t have money for most tourist attractions here on the Island to have something fun to do,” explained Sandyfeet.
Along with the basics of sand sculpting, Sand Camp teaches its students about how to care for the beach, and how to enjoy it without being invasive. It’s also a great place to make friends too, says Sandyfeet.
Jewell Marie says that she loves showing her students new methods to build a proper sandcastle. She enjoys the challenge and finds sharing her sand-sculpting skills extremely rewarding.
“You can truly sculpt and imitate anything out of sand,” says Jewell Marie. “Sand Camp allows me the freedom to really explore the never-ending possibilities.”
For Sandyfeet, Sand Camp is a tool with which she strives to “make the world a better place by building more sandcastles.” She strongly believes that “everyone should build more sandcastles.” In fact, the unofficial
slogan of Sand Camp is “Helping people learn how to have more fun on the beach, forever.”
Updates on Sand Camp are available on the Sand Camp Facebook page. Sandyfeet Sandcastle Services offers many other services as well, including more intensive, private sandcastle lessons, the construction of sand billboards and more. The astounding and ever-so-popular Sandcastle Days will be returning this upcoming October. Be sure to pick up the following editions of the South Padre Parade for more information as it approaches. Stay sandy!
