Point Isabel Independent School district announced on its official Facebook page that an “inappropriate remark” was made at the junior high on Sept. 11.
The PRESS spoke with Juliette Gonzalez, communications specialist at the district, for more information. Gonzalez could not disclose the specifics of the comment due to confidentiality, but she provided insight
into the weight behind these kinds of comments.
“We continuously emphasize to students the power and impact of their words, jokingly or not, to foster a culture of respect and responsibility within our schools. It’s important for them to understand that their
language can significantly affect others, and we work to create a safe learning environment. The safety of our students and staff is our utmost priority,” said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez said students who hear any comment of serious concern should report them immediately to a trusted adult. This can include parents, teachers or other administrators around the school. She added that
remarks deemed inappropriate are dealt with according to the district’s code of conduct.
The code of conduct states that the Campus Behavior Coordinator [CBC] will “work closely with the campus threat assessment and safe and supportive school team to implement the district’s threat assessment
policy and procedures, as required by law, and shall take appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the Code of Conduct.”
The code of conduct also states that a student may be expelled for “engaging in conduct relating to a false alarm or report (including a bomb threat) or a terroristic threat involving a public school.” Students are
also prohibited from mistreating others in the form of verbal harassment, among other ways.
PIISD is dedicated to harboring a “safe, rigorous and innovative educational experience” for its students. For continuous updates on the district, follow their official Facebook page.
