Special to the PARADE
Hedera Tropical Grill is a standout addition to South Padre Island’s dining scene, particularly considering the rocky history of the location it now occupies. A few restaurants in the same building have come and gone over the years, with one even featured on a reality show that highlighted disastrous eateries. Walking into Hedera, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect. Fortunately, what we found was a place that fully deserves a visit.
My friends and I sampled three of Hedera’s dishes, and each one left a strong impression. I chose the Basil Pesto Pasta, which came tossed with cherry tomatoes, grilled zucchini, and bell peppers. I added grilled chicken, and it turned out to be a light yet satisfying option. One friend opted for the Tropical Chicken Skewers—grilled chicken paired with pineapple, bell peppers, and onions, served over rice and accompanied by grilled vegetables. It was flavorful and balanced, with the grilled fruit adding just the right amount of sweetness. The third dish was the Coconut Shrimp, a classic done right. The shrimp were coated in a crisp coconut breading and served with rice and grilled vegetables. It was the kind of plate that made us all reach in for a bite, even if we’d already chosen our own meals.
All three dishes were savory and delicious, and there was a clear sense of consistency across the menu—something that can’t be said for every place in town. Hedera isn’t trying to be flashy; it’s just delivering good food with solid execution and quality ingredients. It deserves attention.
The menu offers several other appealing options that we didn’t get to try, but we would happily return for. The Cilantro Lime Skirt Steak, served with roasted potatoes and avocado salad, stood out to us, as did the Grilled Lobster Tail, which comes with garlic butter, lemon-infused asparagus, and rice. A few more tropically inspired dishes include Mango Glazed Chicken, Seared Tuna with Mango Salsa, and Pineapple BBQ Chicken—all offering creative spins on island flavors. For lighter fare, the Grilled Chicken Avocado Salad and Tropical Stuffed Jalapeños looked especially tempting.
Beyond the entrées we tried, Hedera also offers a wide range of options, including sandwiches and burgers, salads, additional pasta dishes, and well-composed mocktails. The restaurant itself is tastefully decorated, with a subtle tropical theme that avoids going over the top. While we agreed that the space could use a bit more natural light, it still manages to feel comfortable and inviting.
Service was excellent across the board. The staff were attentive and friendly, checking in just the right amount without being intrusive, and keeping everything moving smoothly. We didn’t have to wait too long for a meal, and as I said, the food was outstanding.
One detail that sets Hedera apart is that it offers a Doggie Menu on its open-air deck. Dishes like the Canine Casserole or Beef & Rice Bowl make it easy for dog owners to include their pets in the outing, which is a thoughtful touch in a beachside town where so many people travel with their dogs.
Whether you’re a visitor or a full-time resident of South Padre Island, Hedera Tropical Grill is well worth a stop. It’ll be refreshing to see a restaurant take over a space with a problematic past and not just succeed, but hopefully thrive, by focusing on what matters: good food, good service, and a welcoming atmosphere.
We’ll definitely be back.
