Just weeks after announcing its move across the causeway, Grouchy Gringo is officially open on South Padre Island—and already drawing a steady stream of curious visitors and hungry regulars.

“The hardest part? Definitely the timing. We were still serving food in Port Isabel while trying to get this place ready, so it was a lot of long days and late nights. There were moments I wasn’t sure we’d pull it off in
time, but somehow it all came together,” Lance Deaton said.

The transformation of the new location, in what used to be Skully’s Bar, came together in under three weeks, a turnaround as fast-paced as the restaurant’s kitchen. Inside, the space reflects an eclectic, welcoming
personality. Local flair mixes with personal touches, including hand-painted ceiling artwork by 12-year-old Raye Johnson, all in keeping with the restaurant’s irreverent and playful tone.

The menu continues to build on a Southern Coastal Cajun foundation, riffed with bold flavors and generous portions. Legendary chicken sandwiches and massive burgers stand out alongside seasoned fries that echo
the restaurant’s Cajun influence. At the time of the interview, diners could be overheard praising the food as servers made their rounds.

A fresh new menu is expected to roll out soon, featuring longtime favorites alongside inventive new dishes—each bringing its own twist of spice, comfort, and coastal soul. Expect bold flavor, unexpected pairings,
and that signature Cajun flair that’s earned the Grouchy Gringo its loyal following.

“Biggest surprise was how many little things pop up at the last minute. You think you’ve thought of everything, and then boom—something else needs to be fixed, painted, rewired, cleaned. It was nonstop,” he
added.

A bar up front sets the tone with friendly faces and cold drinks, while a stage toward the back opens many possibilities for live entertainment. Deaton said he’s hopeful to welcome not only local talent but eventually
some bigger-name acts that match the island’s high-energy, entertainment-driven scene. While the restaurant is currently BYOB, Deaton noted plans to begin serving alcohol next month.

“The feedback so far has been really encouraging. People are walking in and saying, ‘Wow.’ A lot of them have followed us from Port Isabel, but we’re seeing new faces too, which is great. Everyone seems to love
the look and feel of the place,” Deaton said.

“I’m probably most proud of how much personality is packed into every corner. We didn’t want it to feel cookie-cutter. It’s bold, a little weird, and it makes people smile when they walk in,” he said.

“The move gives us more space to do what we’ve always wanted. One stage for music, a better kitchen, and a patio with a view of the water—it opens up a lot of possibilities. I think this is just the beginning of a
whole new chapter for Grouchy Gringo,” Deaton said.

Grouchy Gringo is now open at 2213 Padre Boulevard on South Padre Island.
