South Padre Island is widely known for its beaches, warm climate, and outdoor recreation, but visitors and residents now have the chance to enjoy an unexpected seasonal activity along the shoreline: ice skating. The Holiday Inn Resort South Padre Island is offering a beachfront ice skating rink that brings a winter-style experience to the island’s coastal setting.
According to Andrew Hewitt, manager at the Holiday Inn Resort South Padre Island, the rink was designed to offer a fun and unexpected activity for both visitors and locals while still maintaining the relaxed atmosphere the island is known for. The rink is operated directly by the hotel and is open to the public, allowing non-guests to participate alongside resort visitors.
Positioned facing the beach, the rink gives skaters a rare opportunity to enjoy ocean views while on the ice. The unique location sets it apart from traditional seasonal rinks and adds to South Padre Island’s growing list of attractions aimed at expanding year-round tourism.
The ice rink operates on a schedule intended to accommodate a wide range of visitors. It is open Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from noon to 10 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The evening hours allow guests to skate after daytime beach activities, while extended weekend hours make it accessible for families and groups.
In addition to open skating sessions, the resort allows groups to book the rink for special events. According to Hewitt, the hotel welcomes organized gatherings such as birthday parties, holiday celebrations, school outings, and private events. This option provides a distinctive venue for those looking to host gatherings in a nontraditional setting.
Hewitt also noted that the hotel aims to highlight the rink as a seasonal feature that complements South Padre Island’s existing attractions.
