February is the month of love, and while hearts and chocolates are everywhere, I like to think of it as a reminder that love can—and should—be spread every day. As a mom, one of my favorite lessons is teaching my kids how to spread love, even when the world doesn’t always make it easy.
My daughters are night and day. My ten-year-old is full of joy and affection, always ready to hug or share a kind word. My seven-year-old, on the other hand, can sometimes be a little mean or cold-hearted—but at school, both of them are angels. Watching them navigate friendships and challenges reminds me how important it is to guide them in handling difficult people with grace and confidence.
One way we do this at home is by tackling bullies together. I teach them how to “roast” back. We’ll talk about what happened at school, and then we’ll make fun of the bully a little together. It makes my girls laugh, and more importantly, it gives them courage to stand up for themselves next time—with clever punchlines that protect their hearts. I know some may not agree with this approach, but I was that kid in school who never said anything to bullies—my courage only came out in the mirror at home. Now, I get to help my daughters turn that courage outward, teaching them they don’t have to let anyone’s meanness define their happiness.
This February, I want to encourage all of us to remember that love isn’t just romantic—it’s about lifting others up, sharing joy, and even standing strong when life gets tough. And what better way to romanticize life than right here at beautiful South Padre Island? Whether it’s a morning walk along the sand, a sunset with the kids, or just a quiet moment to savor the beauty around you, these small celebrations of life are the ultimate way to spread love.
Let this month be a reminder: every day, in little ways, we can choose love.
