PIECHS girls soccer All-District selections chosen

The Port Isabel Early College High School recently released the 32-4A All-District Selections for the girls’ team.

In the girl’s division, sophomore Liora Helforoush was selected as 1st Team Goalkeeper. One of the top goalies in the district, Helforoush was credited with 75 saves during the season. “She faced many challenging opponents throughout the year and consistently rose to the occasion with strong performances as goalie.” Stated head coach Johnny Nieto.

Other defensive selections included, two-year starter Juliana Greiner who earned 1st Team Defensive honors. Meanwhile, seniors Valeria Ruiz and Albino Cortez earned Honorable Mention.

Team captain and three-year starter, Marishka Baston (8 goals, 4 assists), earned 1st Team Midfielder honors. “Although her primary position was midfielder, Marishka demonstrated her versatility by playing multiple positions on the pitch, making her a valuable asset to our team,” said Coach Nieto.

Freshman, Midfielder Sahara Gonzalez was selected 2nd Team (9 goals, 8 assists). Even as a freshman, Gonzalez played like a veteran on the field. “Sahara plays with the confidence and skill level of an upperclassman and consistently showcased excellent dribbling ability throughout the season,” noted Coach Nieto.

Junior Evelyn Gonzalez received Honorable Mention as a midfielder. Coach Nieto emphasized the importance of her role as a winger, “She matched up against some of the fastest players in the district and made key defensive plays by intercepting and stealing multiple balls from opponents,” said Coach Nieto.

Forward selections were, sophomore Avery Lee 1st Team (team leader in goals at 19, 3 assists), and junior Chelsea Hernandez 2nd Team (14 goals, 3 assists).

Coach Nieto is pleased to see his athletes get recognized for their efforts, “We are very proud of the effort and dedication these players showed throughout the year, and they represented the Lady Tarpons program with great pride,” said Coach Nieto.
