Crowds flowed in by the thousands last week as Texas Week Spring Break 2011 reached a peak. Friday night traffic lines made for wait times of up to three hours to get from Laguna Vista across to South Padre Island and Saturday night the scene was the same. An estimated 40,000 made their way on the island over the weekend alone and at beach access points along the northern end of the island the numbers of over 1,000 cars per day brought even more. Now comes the clean-up.
Clemente Valdez works on the island and he and his crew now take on the task of cleaning up tons of debris and trash that has been left behind.
“There are four of us out here this morning,” said Valdez, “and we will be here until the middle of the week before we can say it’s all clear. ”The four men were busy Monday morning but in reality they had been working on this since last week.
