The Port Isabel Tarpons lost to Rio Hondo, 10-5, on the road on Saturday in their final regular season game.
The team is now busy preparing for their first-round playoff matchup against Orange Grove. It will be a best-of-three series, the first game of which will be at Edinburg Economedes High School this Thursday evening.
“We didn’t play very well,” head Tarpon baseball coach Robert Holland said after Saturday’s game. “They knew that nothing was on the line.” Holland used three pitchers in the game; Armando Fierro, Johnny Loera, and Roger Villareal. The entire pitching staff should be well rested by this Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Holland reported that Orange Grove has been scouted and that they have, “A pretty good little pitching staff.” That pitching staff includes a pitcher that can throw in the mid-80’s (mph.) and has a good curve ball.
Coach Holland is confident the Tarpons will be ready to play baseball by the time they get to Edinburg. “We match up well,” he said.
