Surfrider Shindig, expo headline weekend events

Shindig posterThe Third Annual Surfrider Foundation South Texas Chapter Surfrider Shindig: Music and Art for Our Oceans, Waves and Beaches, is set for Feb. 4 at Louie’s Backyard. The day-long celebration kicks off with a “Paint-Off” at Gravity Park across from Louie’s between 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and will feature Corpus Christi’s acclaimed surf artist John Olvey, Harlingen native and Galveston area resident surfer Julissa Hampton, South Padre Island’s William Lloyd and South Padre Island’s own Sea Gypsy Becky McCormack, who will be on hand to turn surfboards, skimboards, chairs, driftwood or anything else into customized personal pieces of art for the attendee for small donations to the Surfrider Foundation South Texas Chapter.

At 4 p.m., the Shindig itself kicks off upstairs at Louie’s with live music from local surfer/skater Junior Valdez and John-Paul Fedigan of Junbug with their reggae infused acoustic music, the opening of the silent auction featuring Texas surf photography and art along with contributions from local businesses and a shrimp boil.

Austin’s own Moving Matter will also take the stage. The event also features raffles which include tickets from United/Continental Airlines, a classic longboard donated by Mike McGonigle and more.

Tickets can be purchased at On The Beach Surfsports, Island Native Surf House and Paragraphs On Padre Boulevard. Pre-sale tickets are two for $30.

All proceeds will go toward the South Texas Chapter’s efforts in this mission which includes preserving public beach access, restoring and preserving dunes and beaches and educational efforts such as International Surfing Day and public outreach and the organization’s college scholarship program.

The 18th Annual Winter Outdoor Wildlife Expo, sponsored by the Men’s Fellowship of St. Andrew’s by the Sea, Episcopal Church in Port Isabel, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Hilton Garden Inn, 7010 Padre Blvd., South Padre Island. Doors will open at 8 a.m. with the opening presentations beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Featured again this year will be Jonathan Wood’s Live Raptor show followed by a day of seminars on fly fishing, bay fishing, surf fishing, kayak fishing, local and worldwide birding, sea turtles, ocelots, native plants, butterflies, sea beans, shelling and the nature of the Laguna Madre, dolphins, pelicans and more. The seminars and demonstrations will continue until closing at 4 p.m.

Admission is $3 with free coffee and full access to the Hilton Garden Inn’s restaurants and bar.

At noon, the Expo will hold its annual “World’s Greatest Raffle” and “Silent Auction.” Organizers will also present a special award to someone whose life and work has helped to preserve the ecology and natural wonders of the Rio Grande Valley.
