Isla Blanca and Andy Bowie county parks on South Padre Island will get lifeguards beginning Saturday.
The county has contracted with the City of SPI to provide beach patrol services to the parks as a way to make the parks’ beaches safer for swimmers.
“I really believe that anyone who enters our parks would feel a lot better knowing there were lifeguards,” said Sofia Benavides, county commissioner for precinct one.
Park fees will also increase Saturday by $1, bringing the total to $5 to enter the park, to help pay for the beach patrol services. The fee increase will remain in effect until Labor Day. Benavides said next year the fees are likely to increase to $5 beginning in the spring break season.
