South Padre Island beaches have received a five-star rating as some of the cleanest beaches in America by Natural Resources Defense Council.

The NRDC took water samples of beaches throughout the country for a year, testing for bacteria levels. South Padre Island was the only Texas beach to receive a five-star rating.

“We’re delighted,” said Joni Clarke, city manager for SPI. “Everyone is working really hard to keep our beaches nice because so much depends on tourism.”

The NRDC’s findings have been reported in various high-profile media outlets such as CNN and USA Today. Clarke said the coverage is going to help drive more people and business to the Island.
