Child Abuse Prevention Walk this Saturday

The Heavin Resaca Trail will soon be introduced to an event many hope will become an annual affair.

The first annual Child Abuse Prevention 5K Run/Walk, an event sponsored by San Benito CISD, is on tap Saturday, April 27, at Kennedy Park and Heavin Resaca Trail in San Benito.

Set for 9 a.m., the event aims to raise awareness about child abuse and its lasting effects. Angela Totman, a San Benito CISD counselor working in conjunction with Prevent Child Abuse Texas, reported that almost 2,000 cases of child abuse were documented in 2012 alone. “It seems to be on the rise,” she said in a previous interview about child abuse cases.

Also, event proceeds will go toward Prevent Child Abuse Texas, a nonprofit organization promoting the prevention of child abuse and neglect, as well as Maggie’s House and Monica’s House in Cameron County. Donations and sponsorships are currently being accepted in this endeavor.

Festivities at the run and walk will include a number of professional speakers and representatives of various organizations; refreshments will also be served as the event is open to the public.

“Any student who wants to participate can come up to their counselor or contact me so they can pick up a registration or sponsorship form, and we will help them out,” Totman said, adding she sent registration forms to all of the schools. For more info, call Totman at (956) 361-6482.

  1. There’s a new documentary – One Punch Homicide – that will reduce violence against everyone – children, the elderly, disabled, lgbt, women, and men.
