Track preps for first official meet

The Port Isabel High track and field team can be seen at Tarpon Stadium these days practicing and getting ready for the 2017 track and field season.  The Press found head boys coach Joe Gonzales in his classroom at the high school this week to get his thoughts on the new season.

“We just wanted to get times,” Coach Gonzales said Tuesday, referring to the tri-meet his athletes competed in last Friday at Los Fresnos.  “The kids performed well.  We were real impressed with the showing.”

The meet, which included teams from the host school and Rio Hondo, was not an official meet.  It was, rather, the track and field equivalent of a football scrimmage.  No official results were recorded and no medals were awarded.
