Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño has suspended all Cameron County-sponsored functions or events for the next 14 days. The order specifically addresses events with anticipated attendances of 250 or more.
Treviño is also requesting events on South Padre Island be canceled or suspended within 14 days. Events on South Padre Island, such as concerts at Clayton’s Beach Bar, Louie’s Backyard or Rockstar Beach (Isla Grand Resort), are not sponsored by the county.
“I strongly recommend that all similar events, public or private, on South Padre Island or throughout the County, should also be canceled and/or suspended for the same time period,” Treviño said in a March 14 media release. “At this time and based upon the best and most up-to-date information, I strongly recommend and request that our local business leaders exercise their best judgment with respect to their individual venues and events.”

Smart move from our County Judge. It’s a shame that the City of South Padre Island is not taking this as serious. All talk and no action. They must think that the bridge will keep out infections on the island. Shame one the SPI Mayor for not extending cancellations to the island, endangering all residents just for money. Plus the Spring Breakers will only possibly carry the virus back to their homes. This is probably a one time event so please cancel all remaining events with large group attendees. And shame on the owners of Louie’s, Clayton’s and Isla Grand Resort for not being the first to step up. Shame, shame, shame…Money over responsibility.

My mother lives at Long Island Village in Port Isabel and I am concerned that many of the elderly retirees are not taking Covid-19 seriously. Bingo is currently (as I type this) being played at the American Legion on Garcia St. My mom said that a friend of hers has been sick and was tested for Covid-19 but does not know her results yet. This friend served food on Thursday night Bingo at the Legion for over 100 people. I am not sure if this woman was really tested or if this is just gossip, regardless this is concerning. Does Port Isabel have testing capability and if so are there any pending tests at this time? This virus could have a major impact on Long Island Village residents. I am a nurse therefore I have a full understanding of the implications of the virus and the need for social distancing. Any information you have and support you can provide this community is appreciated.

Thank you for the information As Texas has been declared to be in State of disaster, are their guidelines in place to get refunds for hotels and events from the venues in South Padre that were booked? Any information would be helpful. Thank you. 🙂

They are not shutting down events on the island and.I am outraged !! Our college students are following what our leaders say and our leaders are NOT following CDC , the kids are going to come home and spread virus, all for greed!!! CLOSE IT DOWN NOW !!!!
