Unique new shop features Maria Victoria

Special to the PRESS

A bright blue awning has appeared in the Franke Plaza at 700 Padre Boulevard on the Island. Friday, April 1, was the grand opening and ribbon cutting for the Island’s new H&L store.

H&L features the popular Maria Victoria handbags as well as a line of Kinsley Armelle Jewelry and candles by Broken Top.

A short visit with proprietor Kimberly Harper quickly reveals that she is not your everyday shopkeeper. While Kim has been associated with Maria Victoria handbags since 2017, she currently handles on call responsibilities as a Nurse Practitioner for an Oncology practice in Harlingen.

It turns out that Kimberly put eight years of retail management experience behind her and returned to school at age 37 to pursue her medical career. Graduating with honors from Texas Tech University, Kim worked as a Nurse Practitioner in the Dallas area.

She and husband Eric frequently visited South Padre through the ensuing years and Kim will be the first to tell someone how profoundly relaxing and rejuvenating they found the beach environment.

When opportunity came knocking, Harper jumped at the chance to join an Oncology practice in Harlingen and she and Eric relocated to the island in 2019.

In addition to her medical responsibilities, Harper continued her association with Maria Victoria, continuing and expanding her online marketing of the unique handbag line.

During the dark days of the Covid pandemic, she found solace in the contact with her online customers.

As so often happens when one focuses less on themselves and more on others, Harper’s caring attitude resulted in her becoming the number one online purveyor of the unique Maria Victoria line of handbags.
