Special to the PRESS
Former Point Isabel Independent School District Board of Trustees member Jimmy Vela has filed for Place 1 of the Port Isabel City Commission. Vela is a graduate of Port Isabel High School and studied Business and Education Technology at the University of Texas at Brownsville.
As a board member at PIISD, he served as board president and chaired the curriculum committee. He was selected to Leadership TASB, a distinguished program by the Texas Association of School Boards.
Vela solidified many partnerships with city, county and state leaders to ensure PIISD was represented at the local and state level.
Vela’s passion for leadership and service to his community started in high school and at his church where he served in many capacities.
This is when he learned his purpose in life, according to Vela. He is a graduate of Leadership Laguna Madre Class XII and has served in the Port Isabel Economic Development Corporation Board, Port Isabel Planning and Zoning Board, Boys and Girls Club of Laguna Madre Board, and Leadership Laguna Madre Board.
