At Tuesday’s, Jan. 24, Port Isabel City Council meeting, City Manager Jared Hockema discussed raising the amount for trash removal services after Republic Services raised their rates by 3.83%. The city is a couple of years into a five-year contract, but there is a stipulation where the company can raise their rates by a maximum of four percent due to certain conditions like gas prices, etc.
Commissioner Carmen Rios suggested that the City look into absorbing the increase on behalf of the citizens. Rios and fellow commissioner Martin C. Cantu engaged in a discussion with Hockema regarding the amount of money it would work out to be and how that would affect the coffers going forward. Cantu proposed that the city absorb .83%, or nearly a quarter of the increase, in order to not cause a problem with the budget, yet still giving some relief to citizens who see increases in everything from groceries to gasoline. Cantu’s proposal was passed, holding the increase to only three percent.
