Mighty Tarpons set to defend home

No matter the foe, the Tarpons always make a splash in their entries, and Friday’s home game should be no different.

The Port Isabel Tarpons will take on the Bulldogs of Lyford this Friday night in the season home opener at Tarpon Stadium.

Lyford got their season off to a great start last Friday, when they worked the scoreboard for a 47-35 win at home over Hebbronville. They did it with passing as quarterback Jacob Lerma threw for a Valley-best 383 yards. Four of his 21 completions went for touchdowns. “They’re mainly a passing team,” Head Coach Monty Stumbaugh said this week. “The quarterback throws the ball well and the receivers run good routes.”

Apparently they do. Bulldog receivers Art Vasquez and Ethan Cavazos each had two touchdown receptions and James Cruz was among the Valley leaders with seven catches on the night.
