Beach maintenance continues through winter season

Even as the slower season has approached the Island, city staff and committees are continuing to stay busy with long term plans as well as ideas for the upcoming spring and summer seasons. The Shoreline Task Force met Tuesday afternoon to discuss beach maintenance activities and the use of surveys in the next year.

With the help of Dr. Russell Adams of the University of Texas Brownsville (UTB) School of Business, new City Intern Shelby Bessette recently developed a survey to be distributed seasonally to beach goers. The survey will help the city to better understand public knowledge of beach maintenance, to get a sense of beach activities, and to find out what they feel is important. A minimum of 100 surveys will be distributed each season and will include demographic information and agreement statements that will both help the city and also provide public education. The committee felt that the survey was very comprehensive and recommended only small additions about transportation, restroom facilities, and activities. Surveys conducted in both English and Spanish will begin this week and continue throughout the next year.
