South Padre Island firefighters responded to several grassfires this week as temperatures and wind speeds rose.

Two units responded to Isla Blanca Park Monday evening after a report of a fire near the UTRGV Coastal Studies Lab, Interim Fire Chief Albert Perez said Tuesday. The response was slightly delayed due to heavy Fourth of July traffic, Perez said.

The blaze, which burned a 50-square-foot grassy area behind the lab’s east side, was likely caused by fireworks, Perez said. Strong winds blowing from east to west added to firefighters’ concerns, he said.
