On Dec. 20, 2022, police responded to a residence on Michigan Street. According to the police report, they were responding to an animal attack.
The report states that Tosha Varela “had lacerations on her face and hand” after she “had gotten bit by a canine.” It continues to say that Varela was transported to the hospital via medics and that animal control had taken the dog.
According to the owner of the dog, and a previous police report, the dog was a husky.
Varela says the incident occurred around noon, while she was visiting with her sister-in-law. According to her, the sister-in-law’s dog, a cocker spaniel, got loose, ran to the residence where the incident occurred and “jumped” on the other dog.
Varela says she reached down to retrieve the cocker spaniel and that was when the husky “jumped up and lunged forward,” although, according to her, it did not initially react to the cocker spaniel. She says she does not remember what happened after that.
She says she sustained four bite marks and multiple scratches to her hand, resulting in tendonitis. She also says she had to receive 30 stitches in total, 18 on her eyebrow and along her eye, eight in her head, and four in her hand.
According to Varela, the dog had put “gashes” and “little bite marks” in her head on the left side, as well as rip her left eyebrow.
Varela said that the dog was chained up at the time of the attack, but claims that the chain extended “off of the property,” and that was where the incident occurred.
The owner, Julio Landero, 43, claimed that the chain did not extend off the property, stating “No” when asked by the PRESS. Landero claims the dog was tied up inside the property and Varela “invaded”.
