Birders from all over the Rio Grande Valley and beyond migrated to the South Padre Island Golf Course in Laguna Vista this past Saturday for the 11th Annual Bird Fest and Nature Quest. They were there to enjoy birding and a variety of presentations, as well as learn more about bird species and their habitats.

Janet Randall, founder of the Bay Area Birders and organizer of the event, spoke about how her group got started. “I announced to a ladies luncheon group that I wanted to have a birding group. The first meeting I had nine people show up, and now I email over 60 every week.” Randall went on to explain, saying, “There is no fee, we just plan trips. Every week I let people know where we’re going. We meet out here in the parking lot at 8 a.m. and we go birding.”

The trips vary weekly, with recent excursions venturing to the Sabal Palm Sanctuary, the Edinburg Wetlands, and the McAllen Nature Center. Janet spoke with enthusiasm of an upcoming riverboat trip at Riverside, her passion for her hobby evident. “I love it, and I want other people to like it, too,” she said fervently.
