Latin music echoed off the walls of the Port Isabel Community Center, a sometimes dining room, sometimes bingo hall, as several women made their way inside just before 6 p.m. last Wednesday. They set their bags down in a corner by rows of neatly stacked folding chairs. Martha Yadira Tellez, a certified Zumba instructor, welcomed them warmly while familiar greetings were exchanged with each new arrival.
After several moments, the music stopped and the women formed into lines, each 4-5 feet away from her neighbor. With an unspoken cue, the music started up again, louder than before, a staccato beat bouncing off the walls and linoleum floor.
One woman in particular stood near the front, dressed like the others in brightly colored fitness apparel and athletic shoes. Blending in with the rest of the class, one might not at first recognize Cecilia Zamora as the woman who is working hard to improve the quality of life for the residents of Port Isabel.
