Felony theft arrest made

PRESS Staff Report

Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza announced last week that an arrest was made in connection to a local felony theft case opened since early December, 2023.

On Wednesday, December 13, 2023, a representative from the Texas Department of Transportation reported a theft of game cameras from state property in locations west of Laguna Vista, on Hwy 100.

During the course of the investigation, Cameron County Sheriff’s Investigators identified 47-year-old Matthew Gene Golterman, a Laguna Vista resident, allegedly selling the game cameras on a social media site.
According to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), investigators conducted an undercover buy operation in order to identify the game cameras Golterman was selling as the Texas department of Transportation’s stolen property.

According to the CCSO’s report, investigators met with Golterman and viewed two game cameras, which matched the description of the stolen equipment. Sheriff’s investigators then escorted Golterman to his residence where they reportedly recovered ten game cameras, solar lights, and other electronic equipment valued at over $6,000.

The report went on to indicate that investigators obtained a warrant authorizing Golterman’s arrest for Theft, a State Jail Felony. Investigators say that Golterman absconded until March 25, 2024 when he was apprehended in Laguna Vista.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested Golterman and transported him to the Cameron County, Carrizales Rucker Detention Center in Olmito pending arraignment. Golterman is charged with Theft of Property >=$2,500<$30k; TPC 31.03, a State Jail Felony.
