Nudists arrested after reports received

Twelve persons arrested for indecent exposure yesterday after they allegedly appeared nude on the South Padre Island Beach remain in jail at Brownsville today.

Cameron County Deputy Sherriff Hem Bryan said he and other deputies arrested them after receiving a report that someone was running up and down the beach and swimming in the Gulf of Mexico in the nude.

Bryan said the twelve were observed and photographed before their arrest.

Bonds were 200 dollars each for the eleven New York residents and one Pennsylvania man. (WBAP-TV (Television station) Fort Worth, Tex.) April 2, 1969)

PARK BOARD SIGNS CONTRACT FOR GULF FISHING PIER END OF THE LINE FOR PIER NEGOTIATIONS

Two years of negotiations and deliberations ended last Friday when R.J. Kleinman, of Columbus, Texas, signed a contract with the Park Board to build a fishing pier in Andy Bowie Park. (Port Isabel Press, April 11, 1963)

Editor’s note: The Gulf side Pier, situated in Andy Bowie Park some five miles north of the original Queen Isabella Causeway, was constructed by Cameron County Parks in 1962 and was originally leased to Rudy Kleinman.

Kleinman’s Pier (as it became known) extended 300 feet from the shore, terminating in a 200-foot T-head in 18 feet of water.

The structure was 16 feet wide except for an area used by the concession stand and office, 32 wide by 92 feet long. There was also a covered area with benches under a roof composed of multi-colored asbestos tiles.
Kleinman lost his lease in 1968 for failing to properly clean and repair the popular fishing spot after Hurricane Beulah struck in 1967.

Over the next year, Vandals destroyed the walls of the concession stand, throwing the lumber into the gulf. Though there was mention of catching numerous fish from or near it in 1977, I wonder if it ever regained its old popularity. Hurricane Alan struck in 1980 and wiped out the structure, although some pilings were still in the water when I arrived in the early 1980s.
